Bench Vise Rehab
#18
Thanks much Ron!

So here is final picture: a vise in a vise. In the garage, I have a bench vise bolted to the workbench. In my WW shop next door, I didn't want to take up valuable real estate with yet another vise, so I decided to mount the Craftsman on its own mounting fixture, which then can be held in the vise on the front of my WW shop utility bench.

Vise rehab: try it, you will like it.

I was rehabbing them for sale on CL the best place to find color matches was the https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/foru...ay.php?f=4
The problem with rehabbing them for me is I would want to keep them.  So have cut way back on that but it is fun to make something that looks like scrap metal in the morning look like brand new by lunch.  I have a few very large vises I have to rehab  one has to be a couple hundred pounds, I picked it and  up near the Naval Base in Alameda.  The van had a noticeable sag on the ride home

Ha: I must be way slower than the average vise mechanic! But you do get more instant gratification from a vise rehab then, say a 57 Chevy Belair restoration.
Vises can get monstrous: here is a Parker vise i did some years ago: its too large for a home shop (sitting in my basement waiting for my son to create his dream automotive shop);

I may have one of those.  When I went to pick up the large vises the guy there offered to help with putting them into the car by taking a side.  The really heavy one was left for last at which point he told me I was on my own with it.

Here is one of the larger ones take note of the milk crate behind it for scale.  I have to look around I may have sold the large chas parkers I had.
The one below is the largest one I have currently I think it is as heavy or heavier than my anvil.

another one

I think this was the smallest of the lot

I think those are dual purpose tools: huge bench vises, or boat anchors
