Gas Range Not Coming Up To Temp
#11
I've got a 20-year old Frigidaire gas range.  It stopped coming up to temp.  I'll set if for 400*, and it gets up to 320* or so.  It happened a few times last week, and now it seems shot.
Are there any trouble-shooting steps to take before I buy a new one?  Clean the temp probe?  Perhaps there's a sensor that can be replaced?

A while back I had a similar problem with a range, and spent $200 to have a repairman replace a $25 part.  I'm hoping to avoid that (and avoid buying a new range)

Thanks in advance.

May be a silly question...
Many ovens have a means of calibrating (adjusting) the temp. Have you been able to locate and RTM to confirm?

i had that happen recently. It was the ignitor, was easy to replace and reasonable price. The ignitor for my oven has to reach a certain temperature or it would not open the gas valve. Normally this happens in 10 seconds or so. Mine was taking over a minute and sometimes just didn't get hot enough so no gas, no heat. Eventually it would kick in, so sometimes it would heat and other times not, so it could never get up to temp or if it did it couldn't keep it there.

Keep in mind it could be other things.

To check I took off the bottom pan, only a couple of screws and watch it. It should get a nice cherry red pretty quickly. You might be able to see it by pulling out the broiler pan and getting on the floor and looking. Mine was easy to replace, couple screws and a plug for the electrical connection.

there is a real nice parts replacement site, can't find my bookmark for it right now. The one I'm thinking of had a walk through on troubleshooting that was question driven. Maybe someone else here knows the site and can post a link. I will if I can find the bookmark I had. If the part there is expensive I would look elsewhere, I noticed some parts seemed pricey.

I had a bad temperature sensor, don't know where yours is located. if found and you have a ohm meter, the one I had has a 2 wire plug. You will need to set your meter 2k or 4k and at room temp you should be at 1080/1100, below or above by 10% replace.

here is a site similar to the one I'm thinking.  I love sites like this.  Often have a blow up of your model.  You can get the parts model number to search elsewhere if you want.

oven doesn't bake evenly

this is another one, but it doesn't have a troubleshooting section.

Can't find the one I was thinking of. The one I'm thinking of has a better troubleshooting section.

Maybe this one https://fixitnow.com/wp/2011/07/16/how-t...-save-800/     On the same page there is a step by step for checking the igniter along with amp readings.  Roly

Thanks everyone.  Yes, bad ignitor is what I had on my last oven.  I'll give that a shot.

i would compare prices. I like the sites I mention and I usually get reasonable prices but for my ignitor for some reason they were quite a bit more than Amazon. Also the one they were selling did not have a plug on the end but ceramic(?) wire nuts, at least that is what the picture showed. The one from amazon had the nuts but also the plug. I went that way so it was a real simple swap.

Good luck and hope that fixes it.

This.  I had the same issue with my Viking range.  There are 2 ignitors for the oven and when it got down to not heating up like you experienced it was because one ignitor failed and while I was trying to figure out what was wrong the other one failed.  If looking for an ignitor it seems the Maytag part fits a lot of different makes only difference might be the wire connector easy enough to swap out
