Stanley 624G
#9
I have my father's Stanley 624G egg beater drill. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 624 and 624G. As nearly as I can tell from searching the internet, they both have 3/8" drill capacity. Pictures I find of both look the same. However, I have seen pictures of the 624G with a compartment in the handle for drills. Though the handles look the same with the end cap screwed on, I wonder if the 624 does not have the screw-off end cap.

Could be it.  Stanley offered a lot of their eggbeater drills with or without bit storage in the handle.

Not so sure. After posting my question, I saw another photo of one that was a 624 (no G) that also had the screw-off handle cap.

I've looked at Stanley catalogs I have from '34 through '58 and all #624s had handle bit storage, the earlier ones had fancier turned handles but that's about all the difference there was.  I saw no "G" designations in the catalogs.  Perhaps the G came along after '58, that's all I got . . . .

Thanks. At least that info perhaps helps to provide an age for the tool. For some reason I had a feeling that it is of a later vintage.

Often times...that "G" stood for "Government"......as in it was made to fill a Government contract....
Show me a picture, I'll build a project from that

Hmm. Interesting thought. I'm not sure how/where my dad might have acquired it. He was not one to frequent auctions or flea markets and I can't think of how he might have otherwise gotten one from a government contract. Not saying you are wrong. Just wondering.

I have a 624 on eBay now. It has bit storage in the handle.
