I actually made a few backsaws years ago and had made a wooden saw vice to shape and sharpen the teeth. Can't recall what I did with that vice, but don't think I have it anymore.

If you can find a Disston #3d for about fifty bucks, you will have a good vintage saw vise..They are Heavy...and IMO, the best of the vintage vises out there, excluding the commercial variety vises. The Disston #2 is pretty good as well but quite a bit lighter in weight. I frequently use what was once known as a "sawhorse vise"...carpenters carried them to the job in their toolboxes...They just clamped onto a sawhorse..back then carpenters sharpened their own saws on the job almost every afternoon when work was finished for the day. The heavy weight dampens the harmonics and vibrations better than the lighter ones....IMO of course..

Thanks for that link. I can see building a hybrid between the Tom's and Rob's saw vices.
