Let's keep hope alive...How about several Zip ties?? Think they would work? Use hose clamps to "squeeze" the straw, then draw Zip ties tight, remove clamps. Zips are not as "crude" looking as hose clamps.

Yes

I have cut myself often enough on hose clamps that I like the idea of just using the hose clamps for assembly and then removing them after the zip ties or cords are in place.
