Walnut

I am considering making a dining room table out of walnut.  Is walnut hard enough to be used as a table?

IMO, yes and Walnut looks great. It's not as hard as Ash, Oak, Sugar Maple and some others. If you're looking for something that is totally resistant to dings, even those hard woods will ding if they are hit with a hard object and with the necessary force.

My walnut dining table was made in 1958.  Still looks great.

Worry not, walnut makes a fine dining table. (IMHO, of course)
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

That is the only wood our High School shop classes used in the 70's. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to use it.

It's harder than mahogany and they've made tables out of that for hundreds of years.  Here's a list of the Janke hardness scale.
