The best reason to choose 3/4 plywood is if you're inlaying shelf standards (KV 255/256) or screwing in drawer slides.  For drawer slides, longer screws have a better bite and thus a more durable mounting.

1/2 works for lowers just fine. I personally use 3/4 for uppers and add a solid wood nailing flange that gets pocket screwed to the sides and top and bottom of the box. I dont rely on the back to hold a hanging cabinet to the wall.
