Plans for Shaker Style Standing Desk
#9
Morning All,

I am planning on building a Shaker Style Standing Desk for a frient and am looking for a set of plans. I want the "traditional" style...relatively simple. The only plans I have found so far are in February 2016 issue of Popular Woodworking and the Nov/Dec Issue of Fine Woodworking. While these are good designs, my friend wants the simpler traditional Shaker style.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've attached a photo of something similar, but want one w/o a drawer.

Not to be an SA, but why do you need plans?

Plans have their place, but we, as woodworkers, should not be restricted by existing plans. You probably have a general idea of the details of the desk you plan to build for your friend and finding a "plan" that will meet your requirements is unlikely. So I would like to recommend a different option. Draw your own plan.

If you have not created a plan before, you can make one fairly easy by starting with a crude drawing showing the rough measurements, then develop the joinery from that. I have made several projects using this method. I use the information shown in the book "Illustrated Cabinetmaking: how to design and construct furniture that works" to determine the best joints for the project.

It will be far more satisfying to tell your friend that you designed and built his/her desk yourself.

Thomas Moser's books on building Shaker furniture and American furniture have plans for standing desks. I think they all have a drawer, but it would be easy enough to leave it out by either making the writing slope deep enough to accommodate what would otherwise have been the drawer, or again, just leave it out. You may need to alter the leg height in the latter instance depending on the desired height of the writing slope.

John Shea's book on Shaker furniture may have one as well. I don't have my copy handy to take a look.

as an FYI, when looking for books, keep an eye out for used books on any number of sites such as Abe and Thriftbooks, even eBay...

Not always available, but IMHO, worth a few minutes of one's time...

Agree, all the links I posted have a 'buy it used' option from 3rd party sellers through Amazon (very often Goodwill in various cities). By all means use Abe, Biblio, etc. if that suits.

Fine Woodworking has a shaker style plan by Chris Becksvoort, might have his name spelled slightly incorrectly.
