Angle Gage for Shooting Board and More
#2
So how do you set the angle of my shooting board pivot stop?  Well, 45° is easy enough.  You can use your combination square, but a better way is to use a drafting triangle.  Quality drafting triangles are incredibly accurate.  Put your plane against the edge of the shooting board and place the triangle against it, then bring the pivot stop around until it touches the triangle.  Simple and very precise.

You can do the same for a 30° angle using a 30-60-90 triangle.  But what about other angles?  One way is to cut whatever angle you need on your miter saw from a piece of scrap.  As long as the angle is you cut is accurate it will work fine and costs almost nothing.  Another way would be to use a digital angle finder; however, they are not accurate to 0.1°.

After 45° the most common angle needed is probably 22.5°, so I made one with those two angles from 1/4" UHMW plastic specifically for use with the shooting board.

But it's just as useful for checking the tilt of the blade in your table saw or the angle on your miter saw, and one can be yours for $20, including shipping.

Thanks.
