I have heard the term "Red Cedar", and I have heard the term "Western Red Cedar" Is it all the same?

Thanks  Greg
Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut, and have the world think you a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Red Cedar is an eastern species also called "aromatic cedar" and to be found in cedar closets and cedar chests.  It is actually a Juniper I think.  When fresh cut it is bright red, turning brown upon aging.

Western Red Cedar, as I understand it, are those specifically west of the Rocky mountains in the US.

The joys of Common names.

Eastern Red Cedar is Juniperus virginiana (a type of Juniper)
Western Red Cedar is Thuja plicata, which is more closely related to Cypress species.

Both are useful wood, but different trees, characteristics and uses.
