What's the finish on oak church pews?
#4
My church has some pews that need refinishing.  They are the old, 2" thick style-- I'm betting over 50 years old.

I'll do some testing to see what solvents will dissolve the finish but wondering if anyone here has any experience with such pews.
Confused

My guess would be lacquer.

I am willing to bet there is no "standard", how do you know they have not been refinished in the last 50yrs? Just do the tests to see what the finish is and move on. Some hard durable film finish is in order for the refinish.
