A tip and a tool

Also critical is not to use oil that can cause self combustion. I use 3 in one oil as suggested by Paul Sellers, which helps prevent rust, too. I like to use the wide mouth cans as I can draw a small tool (a chisel or dovetail saw) across the cloth without toppling them. Oiling the tools is part of my sharpening regime.

.................
I apply mineral oil with a small 6"x 6" pad of sheepskin, using just enough to slightly moisten the pad... Keep it in a sealed plastic zipper bag...It's important to note that it is available {in my location} in at least two viscosities...I use the "heavy"...I have also used "full synthetic" engine oil which provides even more lubricity and moisture proofing, but doesn't smell as good as baby oil.

Does the mineral oil cause any problems with finish?

Appreciate the humor and the tip.

Whe. You dip the chisels do you just wipe it he back over quickly or do you plunge the chisel into it (like some Japanese woodworkers do)?

Good tips.

Yeah, Rob Cosman likes his wax scribbles also.

Paul Sellers like an oiler (think he recommended 3-in-1) and Deneb P/Chris Shwarz liked their woobies (Jatoba oil), but think those were mostly to wipe down at the end of use.  (recall some comments recommending against any oils prone to spontaneous ignition)

I recall Roy Underhill had his mutton tallow box project for wiping on saw plates and everything.
I must admit I've never used that.

...........
Mutton tallow works very well for water and rust proofing plane soles and saw blades. Tends to be somewhat sticky..Amazon stocks it in variou forms, such as hand cream, organic etc. Years of use builds a wonderful patina on wood.
