One hears that term a lot on some sites...sometimes they claim ONLY a $400 smoothing plane can work on it...or, some fancy machine?
Well....here are 4 Ash boards to consider...
These four are 3/4" x 6" x 4'....seller had run them threw his planer to get from 4/4 down to ALMOST 3/4" thick...
Other faces of the 4?
Handsome devils, aren't they? $0.80bft Ash, BTW...
This MIGHT be a bit of "FUN"..
Stay tuned...

Well, took about an hour of cross cutting, and ripping, went from about 8 bft down to about half of that...
The "Good"...
These are all 3-1/2" wide..by ~3/4" thick...
Might glue these up into a panel? Have a DVD Cabinet Project that will need a raised panel for it'd door
The "Bad"
Was able to cut out the worst sections but...
Some areas were a bit too far gone...
And then, there was The Ugly...
That even Tuco the Rat would not like..
The board this "Thing"is laying on?
The other half of this plank?
Had a few "Issues"....
Shop is closed, today ( that Monday thing) have taken a few measurements for the new DVD Cabinet...case will use these 3 planks..
Same tree, Ash....
Stay tuned...

Lets see...hauled the planks to the shop...needed 2 pieces @ ~ 26" long..
Start with this one...
As I needed 2 such panels , and 2 shorter panels...
And use some of the Nastier Stuff to fill out the widths..
Both for the longer side panels, and the shorter Top and Bottom panels..
Joint the edges for a better glue joint. spread some glue..add a few clamps..
Once I get a gap free joint..
One done..
2 sides done..and..
Letting these sit a day or 2
Stay tuned..

Monday..Shop was closed...Something to blame the Irish for?
Tuesday...Was shut down by a BAD day of Vertigo...
Wednesday? Pay Day Errands, all the live long day
Thursday Morning? Cardio 6 Month Check-up...new Meds, and a couple people to schedule tests with...
Thursday Afternoon..1 hour in the shop, before the legs said they were done for the day...
Clamps were removed from all 4 panels..
trimmed the ends, and make sure they were square..
And get all 4 to the correct length..
There was a problem, though..
None were the same width...set the rip fence to the narrowest one, run them through..then finish up with a plane..
Set the 2 side panel aside, for now..lay out the 2 ends...
And decide which looks better, for the Top of the case..
Needed to set out a few tools....and also flattened the panel...
Marking gauge for the Baseline...the rest to lay out the Pins..
And get the Disston No. 4 Backsaw down of of it's hook...
Friday? Looking like a saw & chop day....yes, I do Pins first, YMMV, of course...
Stay tuned..

Friday work...
Saw was working great, until..
Ooops..take the piece out, and over to the other end of the vise..
then a bit of work with the chisels..
Before I can transfer any marks to the Tail Board...I needed to first flatten said board...
THEN the Pins were traced around with a needle sharp No. 2 Pencil..
Then a bandsaw to remove all the waste, leaving the lines intact...
Dry fit right off of the saws...
A wee bit too snug?
So...that was Friday....Saturday was fine tune this fit....and get the other corner dovetailed, as well..
Stay tuned...

Saturday's work session, was almost 3 hours long...and, no..I do not get paid for overtime after 90 minutes...
Files and a paring chisel..
slim the tails down a bit...as for the Pins?
Shave back to a line..test for fit....
I think that will just have to do...
Repeat for the other top corner...
Saw still working ok? For the final 3 cuts, I lifted the part out of the vise, rotated it around and finished up those cuts. Little wood block wa to prevent the vise from racking..screw to prevent said block from dropping to the floor..
Decided to use the chopping block and save the top of me bench..
And Pins were soon done.. and, before I could transfer the layout marks from tracing around each pin...I once again needed to flatten a board..
Ya think? THEN trace around the Pins..
knife to make a knife wall...then over to the bandsaw, to remove all the waste around the tails....leaving as much of the layout lines as the saw will allow..
Dry fit for both top corners.....bottom corners? a bottom SHELF will be sitting in a dado...
Along with two 1/4" thick plywood shelves....
Next? Need to decide on how the case's back will get attached...groove, or, rebate......leaning more towards a rebate...
Stay tuned....

Before any errands were run, this morning..took the largest case for one of the DVDs..to see IF I can just run a 1/4" x 1/4" groove to house a 1/4" Plywood Back Panel in...yep!
So..needed a jig set up..
Then set up a plough plane..
Yeah, yeah, I know...took about 3 minutes each....results?
Turned out. I was going against the grain...as I was getting chips, and not "noodles"....good thing I sharpened the cutter before I installed it?
Lunch break once the errands had been run...waiting on that to settle through the system...then back to the shop, to plough 2 more grooves...in the 2 side panels..this first one was the top of the case..
stay tuned...

That's what I get for being in a hurry....that nice groove? was on the WRONG face!
Which I found out during the dry fit....had to knock things apart, mill the correct groove, and then dry fit, again...
But, what to do about that wrong groove? We have ways.....the "Before"..
"The Plan"...
Dry fit to find out what size the cut the 3 shelves to.
Grooves for the 2 side panels, also a bit of "Drama"....
Trying not to let the Stanley #45 knock that little chunk off...had to use a Dovetail saw to saw kerfs to allow the plane to plough just the groove..
One Dado did need cleaned up..
For those "Veritas Sales People" out there...I am using a 1/4" Veritas Cutter...but, that is a Stanley No. 71-1/2....
Then reset the depth, and clean up a few places in the grooves..
Was able to cut and fit the shelves...
BEFORE I decided on whether to do the grooves, I double checked to see IF there will be enough room...
Need to mill the Ash filler strips for in front of the plywood shelves...and MAYBE try for a glue up of the case....Might even cut a 1/4" plywood panel for the back, before I can do the glue -up....Might be a good idea?
Stay tuned...
