RE: A Project for May? - Grandpa Dave - 05-15-2024 Coming along great Bandit...today is Wednesday, May 15th. Prayers the transition back home for Mrs. Bandit goes well. BTW, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Best wishes to you today. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-17-2024 Runners..something for those 8 drawers to slide on..need 18 of them..cut for length, have tenons milled on each end [attachment=51107] Tenons check for a slip fit.. [attachment=51108] And make sure they match the layout lines..for length.. [attachment=51109] All 18 of these are done... Back rails where the back of the case gets attached to, and supports the back end of the runners... [attachment=51110] Problem? I need 9 back rails, only have enough good pine for ONE....off to Lowes, and buy five 1 x 2 x 4' ( on SALE!)..haul the best 4 to the shop, cut them down to match the first one for length.. move the tablesaw out of the way...bring out the router table again...reset both fences and the STOP line.. [attachment=51111] As all I need to allow for, was the tenon.. [attachment=51112] On the back end of the runners.. [attachment=51113] And that will do for the router table work, and working with Pine for a while..Stay tuned.. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-17-2024 Need to mill dovetail sockets, to install the front rail's dovetails in. Socket in milled with a hand held router, using this 3/8" dovetail bit.. [attachment=51114] Used the Hi-Tech Router Lift.. [attachment=51115] Allen wrench set...used the Backer Block to set the depth of cut. Cleaned off the tablesaw [attachment=51116] And it is now a work table...clamped down the back side...do some lay out work.. [attachment=51117] Using one of the front rails . marked out where to place the fence to guide the router..and a stop line or 2.. [attachment=51118] From the bottom of that rail to the fence, is 2-5/8" [attachment=51119] Some of the tools in use...had 9 sockets to do.. [attachment=51120] Bottom one was a bit tricky...ran out of places to clamp the fence to...reversed and had plenty..takes a while, but.. [attachment=51121] This side of the case is all done...except.. [attachment=51122] I needed to transfer ALL those markings over to side #2...and mill those today Stay tuned.. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-18-2024 Been very busy, the last few days...I suppose I should do an update to this.... Side #2... [attachment=51130] Web Frames: the runners have their tenons done, and the 2 counter bored holes drilled [attachment=51131] All 36 of them.. [attachment=51132] Front rails..have a dovetail "Tail" milled on each end...and a mortise...to fit the above tenons.. [attachment=51133] Back rails have been cut to length, and a mortise milled.. [attachment=51134] Nails and glue, and a clamp now and then,,assembly.. [attachment=51135] 2 nails per corner..front and rear.. [attachment=51136] Then a dry fit... [attachment=51137] Had 9 frames to build.. [attachment=51138] These join the 2 sides of the case, and is where the drawers will be sliding on.... Stay tuned.. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-18-2024 Got the frames done this morning..and, after that dry fit...started to install all of them.. [attachment=51139] Glue on the tails, and along the edge of the frame.. [attachment=51140] Hammer to "assist" the tails home...square to well square the frame to the front...Add one screw in the hole in the back.. [attachment=51141] Then add the front screw. Working my way along until.. [attachment=51142] I ran out of frames and sockets... Then the "FUN" can begin... Removed this mess from the "Assembly Table" and place Side #2 on the table...spots of glue where needed..lift Side #1 up and onto Side #2..and connect things up..made sure the frames were square again...finally,, just set the entire mess down on the floor.. [attachment=51143] On it's own 4 feet... Start time this morning? 0855 hrs....Quitting time? 1155hrs... Time for Lunch and a nap Stay tuned.. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-20-2024 Needed to add a couple parts.. [attachment=51161] needed a pine filler strip at the top and the bottom at the back rails...something to attach the back of the case to.. [attachment=51162] Along with an Ash one at the top...fills in between the top divider and the top of the case.. There was a piece for the bottom.. [attachment=51163] But, there was a problem.. [attachment=51164] wasn't quite wide enough..so, had to make a new one that did fit.. [attachment=51165] Both bottom pieces are secure with glue and screws...not only broke a pilot hole drill bit,,,I had to repair a split, despite pre-drilling the hole.. [attachment=51166] Back up on top...corner braces were installed.. [attachment=51167] These also are used to attach the top to the case..using a slotted hole, a screw and a washer...allows for wood movement, that way.. I think that will do, for this episode.. Stay tuned.. RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-21-2024 Yesterday was "Fetch & Carry Day" First part was carry the plywood panel to the shop...rip and cross cut it to size.. [attachment=51172] And square up the case...was about 1/4" out...that done..set it back down on the floor..and out of the way,,,for now... [attachment=51173] Monday was the "Fetch" part..hauled 2 planks to the shop..to see IF I had enough for 8 drawer fronts.. [attachment=51174] Did have just enough...although 6 of them needed resaw to 3/4" thickness... [attachment=51175] Which left this ridge down the center line..and a few burn marks, to boot... Fetched 2 more planks.. [attachment=51176] The goal here was to find 4 usable pieces to glue up into the Top of the case... [attachment=51177] 3 were also ripped narrower..and all 4 will need to be jointed.. [attachment=51178] Was a bit of a busy day, for a Monday.. [attachment=51179] Had to sweep this mess up, and then called it a day... Left the case sitting off in a corner, for now.. [attachment=51180] Stay tuned... RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-22-2024 Hmm, need to update this thread a bit? Jointer work? [attachment=51210] Old No. 7c at work..needed to joint a few edges, to make a glued up panel for the top of the case... [attachment=51211] That metal "yardstick"? Called a Tinner's Rule...I use it as a straight edge [attachment=51212] Helps find high or low spots...then check that the edges are square.. [attachment=51213] Lay the parts out, for a dry fit...There IS a large "V" showing how to align them up.. [attachment=51214] After they all look good, time for Glue, Cauls, & Clamps.. [attachment=51215] Double cauls...2 clamp on top, one pipe clamp under..no gaps allowed...nor seen.. End of part 1...stay tuned for Part 2 RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-22-2024 Part 2...them rough and burnt resawn drawer fronts.. [attachment=51216] Needed some attention.. [attachment=51217] Figured I could let the Stanley No. 5-1/2 Jumbo Jack handle most of the work.. [attachment=51218] Seemed to do the job... needed 6 drawer fronts worked on..as they were the ones resawn to 3/4" thickness. The other 2 were already there. I also took the time to make sure they FIT into their openings... [attachment=51219] And take a break, now and then.. [attachment=51220] So, why is this one standing up in the vise? Seems it was a lot thicker than the other, and I did NOT feel like using a hand plane to remove THAT much.. We have ways.. [attachment=51221] Then clean up with a Buck Bros. No. 4... [attachment=51222] Not sure what to do with the "leftover" [attachment=51223] All drawer fronts fit..I think that will do for a Tuesday Morning in the shop Stay tuned... RE: A Project for May? - bandit571 - 05-22-2024 Got bored, last night (Still Tuesday, BTW) so...set up the Tablesaw...by tilting the blade to 15 degrees. Set the Zero Clearance Overlay on the saw...set the fence 3/8" away from where the blade comes up through the Overlay...and run all 4 edges of each drawer front through... [attachment=51224] Drawer #8 is a bit narrower than the rest of them.. [attachment=51225] And made another mess on the floor... [attachment=51226] That I had to clean up..BEFORE I can do the Fetch & Carry Part 2...today. Stay tuned.. |
