What is this fastener? - MsNomer - 12-14-2015 And how does it work? It looks like a nail with a washer: Except the "washer" is a really tight fit and goes between the two pieces of wood, embedded in the lower (upper in the pic): The head does not penetrate the surface of the top board but is embedded in it: To remove it, I had to pry the boards apart. Scary from a salvage wood standpoint because I did not know these were in there until I pried the boards apart. I thought the boards were just held together by the regular nails which were also present. Re: What is this fastener? - DaveR1 - 12-14-2015 Does the washer move at all? Or is it part of the nail? Looks like a double-headed nail. Or maybe, considering its length it's a concrete nail. See this for some info: http://www.ramset.com.au/product/detail/72/concrete-nails Re: What is this fastener? - woodcutter199 - 12-14-2015 That nail is fired from a power actuated gun. It appears to be a HILTI brand so the gun would be a 27 caliber tool. It is normally used to tie metal studs to a wall or floor Re: What is this fastener? - MsNomer - 12-14-2015 Ahhh. The first piece was a furring strip on a concrete wall. The second piece was nailed over it? Re: What is this fastener? - MsNomer - 12-15-2015 Makes sense considering that this was salvaged from a college dorm that would have had cement block walls. Re: What is this fastener? - DustyDan - 12-15-2015 You may want to disinfect the wood considering the source |
