And how does it work?
It looks like a nail with a washer:
Except the "washer" is a really tight fit and goes between the two pieces of wood, embedded in the lower (upper in the pic):
The head does not penetrate the surface of the top board but is embedded in it:
To remove it, I had to pry the boards apart. Scary from a salvage wood standpoint because I did not know these were in there until I pried the boards apart. I thought the boards were just held together by the regular nails which were also present.

Does the washer move at all? Or is it part of the nail? Looks like a double-headed nail.
Or maybe, considering its length it's a concrete nail. See this for some info:

That nail is fired from a power actuated gun. It appears to be a HILTI brand so the gun would be a 27 caliber tool.
It is normally used to tie metal studs to a wall or floor

Ahhh. The first piece was a furring strip on a concrete wall. The second piece was nailed over it?

To me that looks like a masonry nail, the nails and the applicator was sold by Sears ( craftsman ) Do not know who the manufacture was.

^^^^ This. A powder actuated nail gun fires these.
Ramset & Hilti are just a couple of the companies that make them.

Makes sense considering that this was salvaged from a college dorm that would have had cement block walls.
