Rockwell 6x48 belt sander find - MarkSingleton - 07-21-2018 Tool funds took a hit Thursday. Rockwell Model 31-501. VintageMachinery.orgs' lists give a born on date of 1965. It is in rough shape but runs. Kid that had it never cleaned the metal swarf off. "Blade making" was his use. He said he got it from a closing machine shop in a nearby town. So perhaps I am the third owner. Missing the left side and top guard. Broken/missing knobs etc. But should clean up nice and be yards better than the mid seventies craftsman already in inventory. Probably move that one on, when this one gets fixed up. Obligatory pic ( from the craigs list ad ): [attachment=11715] a hundred and fifty bones. ( Old arn getting harder to find...) RE: Rockwell 6x48 belt sander find - lift mechanic - 07-21-2018 Good find, they don't make them like that anymore. RE: Rockwell 6x48 belt sander find - EvilTwin - 07-21-2018 Not bad at all. Are you going to go through it and do all the bearings, etc? DC on these machines is never all that great, so if it doesnt have all the guards/etc you wont miss that much. I would check the drums for a crown and the platen for any sort of dips, those are the usual wear spots on these large belt sanders. RE: Rockwell 6x48 belt sander find - MarkSingleton - 07-22-2018 Took a few minutes today to blow off the crud. The motor jumps when you start it and when you stop. Because whoever mounted it just "sorta" mounted it with two bolts ( one of which is very loose ) instead of four. Not at all sure that the slots are lining up right either. But, on the other hand. There is a nearly new Baldor Model #L3507 3/4 HP 1725 motor in it. Still shiny under the crud I blew off. That alone was worth the price. Shoulda seen the smile when I saw it... Do have a manual coming. Too many other projects ongoing for now. It will get taken apart cleaned painted and missing stuff found or fabricated. Some day. The unit itself seems pretty robust. No squeals, noises etc from bearings thus far. Wheeled into the 'waiting for restoration' area and soon to have its' own sheet over it for now.
