Thoughts on General Finishes water based stain? - JSpill - 11-23-2018

I'm thinking of using General Finishes golden oak water based stain on an ash grandfather clock. Several coats of Waterlox would follow. Does this sound reasonable?

It is a personal thing as far as color. As far as finish compatibility, I do not know of any problems.

Fully compatible. You will get a bit of grain raising. And I've found the GF has a bit more surface tension so add a drop or two of dish soap per quart of the stain. Don't shake, stir gently for no foam. And flood the surface. Now the the stain will get down into the open grain more easily.

Just a reminder to test your finishing schedule on scrap to make sure the color, finish is what you want.

You might try a sample board dampened lightly with water before applying the water based stain to allow more even color. Always have to remind myself to check my finishing schedule first before hitting anything new or different products too.
