The important thing to understand with hand planes is that the shavings don't follow the full face of the iron on a bd, or the full face of the bevel on bu planes. The shavings are actually deflected...

Hi Paul. IMO a BD of 40* may be suit some of the softer timbers, and end grain work, but you will have difficulties using the same plane on hardwoods.[br][br]Stewie;
