My guess: clamps mount on the edge of your work bench, 2x4, or any stable surface, forming a bar clamp.

I could have used one or more of those plenty of times to clamp against a solid surface where a C type clamp couldn't be placed around the object.

These are called Right angle clamps
These are called Face Frame clamps Neither of them has a second way to tighten, they merely use friction against the piece you are clamping up too. Both remedy needing a third hand. Only other kind of oppositional clamp I know of? Thats the best I got for you
