A lot of the bigger commercial lumberyards will sell retail on the side if you ask. We have a big hardwood supplier not ten minutes from my house, and while they normally sell hardwood by the pallet, they will also sell a walk-in customer a single board if you ask. The worst they can tell you is "Sorry, we can't sell in small quantities."
