I picked up a long 2 x 6 recently that's pretty clear. It's marked spruce, fir or pine, and it's from Canada. Is there any assumption I can make about the species given that it's from Canada? I'm building a skin-on-frame canoe and am looking for spruce, if I can get it. In the past I've found some spruce from northern Europe at Menards--it's marked spruce--but it's exceedingly hard to find a board that's clear.
Wood question: spruce?

No way of knowing by the designation on the piece. Construction lumber and likely tooo wet to use for much else.
There are plenty of vendors for that. I did a search:
https://www.google.com/search?client=fir...CAw&uact=5 "Clear spruce for boat building near me". I'm not sure it will transfer to your address; you may have to type in the search yourself. I found three vendors within 60 miles of my house. Also look at this directory of marine lumber suppliers: https://www.glen-l.com/resources/lumber-suppliers.html
