spindle roughing gouge
#14
I have 2 older books on woodturning.

One is 'THE PRACTICAL WOODTURNER' by F. Pain.  My version is from 1974.  On page 13, the roughing out gouges are described, and on page 14, they are drawn.

The older book is 'GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LATHE' published by Delta in 1954.   Cannot see any reference to a roughing gouge, and it does show a set of turning tools with several gauges from 1/4" to 3/4", but all feature a curved profile at the tip, and not the straight of a roughing gouge.

Hope this helps.

I found a 1922 book called Wood-Turning by William Fairham. Oddly enough, it doesn't really introduce the reader to lathe tools. The only pics of gouges were round nosed gouges and the only other lathe cutting tool shown was a straight chisel. No skew chisels or square ground gouges in the book. He does describe roughing out in the book, but it's done using a traditional round nosed gouge.
Still Learning,

Definitely helps, thanks-
I don't want to brag, but some of my wood is on its 2nd or 3rd project!
