I was tickled to see a shooting-board cited in a Metalworking magazine lately!
The end product idea was a short-length, very square, segment from a discarded metal rule. The rule-segment could be used in tight spots, as a measuring device or even just as a "story stick" spacing device. The rule-segment needed to be very squarely finished (and at correct desired length) after the initial rough cut-off. So, the author used a metal-file on a shooting board:
