I would install an additional metal ring around the wood hole with a 1/4" air gap for better heat protection, being set 1/8" above the surface as well it would serve to help prevent stuff from rolling or falling off into the hole.
Unless over time you don't mind the wood turning black and/or drying and cracking.

That picture was making my neck hurt. I reduced the size a smidge so the auto correct software didn't turn it.
Is that a COKE opener? If it is I like it a LOT, if it's brand X or Poopsie burn the whole thing to the ground
