1/2" plywood for furring strips

So between my basement stairs and my concrete wall, there isn't much room. I've been thinking of putting 2" foam, ripping 1/2" plywood strips for furring, and 1/4" drywall.
Unfortunately moving stairs or making them narrower is not an option.
What the thought on this?

I would glue the foam (extruded, not expanded) to the concrete and then glue the drywall to the foam.

If you do this, devise a clamping method if you want flat drywall.    Perhaps you can use wedges between the drywall and the basement stairs, or something like that.

There are engineered solutions for that.  They probably cost more than you solution, but it is a small space, so likely not too much expense.

I had seen one system in a youtube video, but it appears that there are multiple options out there.
