What is a two-armed tool called that marks a point on an upper board to line up with a point that has been drilled on a board underneath or that cannot be seen?

Since I'm not exactly sure I've got your description correct, would an outside caliper do it? I envision you want to mark the same point on the top and the bottom of a board.

Dowel centers work basically the same as the punches I referenced in post #12.  They are generally only available in common dowel sizes, and are very inexpensive.

I use the center finding punches this way:

I make a template from masonite, marking all the locations for cuts, holes, etc. with a prick punch.  I then drill out those marked positions with a 1/4" or 3/8" drill bit.

I then place the template over the plywood and using the appropriate size punch I mark the centers for all the data points.

At that point it is just "connect the dots" or drill out the holes.

From what the OP said, I think he's asking about the jigs used to make sure a hole intersects with another deep hole crosswise, as for locating a nut for a bed bolt. While I don't have a name, here's a link to such a jig: https://www.finewoodworking.com/2012/11/...-alignment
