Mortise Chisels getting a new home?

Except...that rack only has a single, SMALL hinge at one end ( red circled area) and...

You need a pair of Kevlar Gloves to reach in there and pull a plane out...

Since I went out and bought a stack of "Lumbah"..

Maybe I can build a box to house the 11 Mortise Chisels...and re-use the rack?

First things first....this is way too long and way too FAT....too long is easy enough to fix..

One half will be for the 6 Skinny Mortise chisels..

1/4" and narrower ones.   Trim any excess off the ends.   The 5 fat chisels?

Did not need 6 holes...square to mark where to cut off the excess.   "Plan"?   Is to hang this rack on the inside of a case's door....so, it CAN be a bit shorter than the other one, which will get attached to the back of the case. 

That takes care of the Length problem...next up...weight watchers for Racks..

I ran the 2 racks through the tablesaw...to remove as much as I could without hitting a screw..

Which I tend removed, anyway....reset the fence, and ripped off the counter bores, then reset and ripped the same amount off the other edge...the one face that wasn't sawn, needed planed level..

Skinny chisels wanted to wiggle around in the slots a bit, so...

A Forstner bit was sized up...and..

The slots were opened up, as well...as being in the back of a case, I can't lift a chisel straight up and out of the rack....so, to keep said chisel IN the slots..

A Hinged Keeper will be used...Open up to get a chisel...then..

Close the keeper.    Half of the skinny chisels are of the Socket style....decide to run a countersink bit...

And now the chisel will sit nicely in the slot.    Brace Drill is a Millers Falls No. 1950, Buck Rogers....that Large counter sink won't even cut warm butter...will need a good sharpening, someday..

With both racks about done, I can figure out how deep a case to build....in theory

And rip the 4 sides of the box to width..

And cut them for length...

Stay tuned...the corners of the case are 1/2" through dovetails....should be fun?

I'm thinking you will need additional slots for future purchases as well.  

I'm surprised that little hinge was able to hold the weight of those chisels.
