Worth a try for me, sounds very reasonable if used very modestly.

My first big project (17-18 years ago) was a farm table made from a plan in Woodsmith.  I think I saw the sand/salt trick back then, either in the magazine or on a TV show.  I did use it on that project, but haven't done that since, and likely wouldn't now.  Now I just do glue-ups taking slippage into account and dealing with it as I go along.
