Black locust might be the densest wood that grows fast. Measured in BTU/cord-year, it might be the fastest growing fuel wood that exists. Measured in LB/bd-ft-year, it might be the fastest growing hardwood that exists.
I know of no tree growing the the USA that produces more dense wood faster than locust, and some thornless and podless varieties are available, also known as thornless honey locust. One of them is growing is my front yard.
