HANDTOOLS: Chrispy PreWar #4 and Jennings Bits
#7
I finally figured out the right angle and setup to grind chipbreakers on my Tormek; this is  less chance for error than my prior technique using stones and files for tuning the chipbreakers.  Anyway, this is a very crispy smoother, prewar Type 16, plenty of iron, 98% japanning, wood solid, sole and mouth good, no apologies whatsoever; this is marked "imperfect" from the factory, the only thing I can find that fits that bill is a couple of small inclusions in the casting at the heel, certainly nothing that impacts use at all, but it was not "perfect"  during the period when Stanley really gave a darn about their planes.  Anyway, its a really nice plane, and I squared up and sharpened the iron on the Tormek and it works just like it should.  More attention to the iron will only improve performance.

Just to say, all the planes I post (except for "barn fresh") have been fully disassembled, cleaned thoroughly, tuned to perform, and tested.  Pics:

this plane is particularly nice.  Yours for $42.50 plus shipping.  First PM with an unequivocal "I'll take it" gets priority, and please include your shipping address so I can figure shipping and print mailing labels.

I don't have paypal, so payment by USPS money order unless I know you then a check is just dandy.

thanks for looking; a really nice user for someone's till.

An add-on: a partial set of Russell Jennings 100 style with the fine lead screws for hardwoods, I think there is one Swan in there (even better maker, actually), in sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 16, these are all in 16ths graduations.  All have good to very good flute length, and none of the lead screws are buggered up, see the closeup pic below.

I basically used the square edge jig, put it on the guide rod and lower until the bottom of the jig barely clears the wheel, then insert the breaker such that the front of the jig Is about 1/8" past the screw hole, and it gives me the perfect angle. Works for me. Play with the distance from the screw hole as this can vary from breaker to breaker so you get angle you want but keep the breaker square to the jig. Here's a pic of the jig and screw hole alignment. Then grind away and dress with the leather wheel.
