Garter snakes are harmless. Unless they are in the house, leave them alone.

As to cats and snakes, I once had my cat alert on a small rat snake that had managed to find it's way in the house. I quickly terminated him (the snake, not the cat), as I was afraid he might get away if I tried to catch him. I couldn't afford to move if SWMBO found out there was a snake in the house. The cat was in full alert mode, tail standing straight up, fur standing up, hissing at something in the corner to beat the band. I've never seen him alert like that on anything else.

The cat definitely earned his kibble that day.

SWMBO still doesn't know about that incident.
