Most factories are not air conditioned and are not heated on weekends and evenings. They sell "factory, industrial" workbenches with butcherblock tops (so does Sears). They have some sort of applied clear coat (not penetrating).
I think it is fine.
No animals were injured or killed in the production of this post.

Reloading bench is long grain versus end grain, I put tung oil on it. My sitting, figuring, drafting, drinking bench is laminate. My general work / assembly table is plywood with no finish. My gettin' medieval on something bench is 2x12"'s with no finish.
