Isn’t the fan on the bottom or back of the fridge? The sound is definitely coming from the top of the fridge compartment.
What is the “chute” you’re referring to?
The sound went away for a day or so. It’s back.
It’s definitely coming from in here, Should I just take this cover off and see what’s going on?

It’s definitely coming from the defrost timer. Looks like I can just swap this out?

Order one on amazon and swap it out. That's the newer style. The old ones were all black. Just make sure to use either the model number of the fridge for look up or the part number on the timer.

Our side by side fan makes a clicking/tapping noise sometimes. It was designed too close to the shroud. Pushing foods in there too aggressively sets it off. I don't worry about it- sooner or later the edge of the fan will wear down, but it has been 8 years now.

It was the defrost timer. I replaced it, no problems since. (Although perhaps I could have just reset the old one?)
