Skip the splines. Lay the parts face down on the bench, edge to edge. Tape the joints in the flat with clear packing tape. Flip, apply the glue and fold the parts together using the tape as a hinge. Perfect every time.

This is an excellent tried and true method.  There's also the packer's knot using strong cord.  Disposable band clamps.
