Eww not fun. I always cut those with a bandsaw or hacksaw.

Ouch.
I found one of those with a tubing cutter. Not nearly as bad as your experience, just much harder work.

Yikes !! Hope it wasn't too serious and you heal quickly. On a much smaller scale, I cut some screws off the other day, betting they were stainless. Nope, nickel plated brass. You just never know.
I no longer build museums but don't want to change my name. My new job is a lot less stressful. Life is much better.
