I have used titebond and sawdust and filled in with small slivers of wood. Careful and try and match grain patterns.

I do a lot of boxes and use a MDF board with 1 sheets of sandpaper to flatten. For hinges I use mostly piano hinges as they are cheap, but getting harder to find good quality ones. Oh I hate mitered...

Not sure if this helps but light wood on the walnut was very soft and punky. I used most of a bottle of cryogenic thin glue. RonL
