Same here. Ive tried a couple of times, but the wood’s been too dry/brittle.

I have seen that episode a couple of times...I also have the book the presenter published...One of the reasons it interests me is because I remember my grandfather making both fan birds and fans out of apple crates....My mom had several he made that were in my sister's possession until they were destroyed when her house burned.

Join a woodcarving club. They teach stuff like this. A good friend of mine learned the technique to teach to his club. I don’t recall any of the specifics.

It's just a matter of getting a "round to it"....at the rate I am going it will never happen...But I do have some nice white cedar on hand just for that purpose...so who knows??
